Better Vision Correction

The figure 20/20 means that a patient has normal vision and is a result that can be determined when an individual takes the Snellen chart eye test. From this test alone, the eye doctor, called an ophthalmologist, can determine whether you have eye problems or not. Eye problems can arise from different causes either from refractive errors or an underlying eye disease.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors mean an error in refraction. Refraction is the point in the vision pathway that enables individuals to see different objects from different distances. When there is an error in refraction, individuals can either have difficulty seeing from a distance or seeing in short distances.

  • Myopia - is a type of refractive error that is also called nearsightedness. Patients who are diagnosed with this type of refractive error can see objects that are near but have difficultly seeing objects from afar.
  • Hyperopia - is another type of refractive error that is also called farsightedness. Patients who are diagnosed with this particular type of refractive error can see objects that are far but have difficulty seeing objects that are near them.
  • Astigmatism - is also known as distorted vision. Patients diagnosed with this type of refractive error have difficulty seeing from both near and far distances.
  • Presbyopia - is a type of refractive error brought about by old age.

Types of Major Eye Diseases

Aside from suffering from eye problems, some individuals also suffer from eye diseases. There are three identified major types of eye diseases:

  • Cataracts - is an eye disease that causes the cornea of the eye form a milky layer that impairs vision.
  • Glaucoma - is an eye disease that is caused by an increase in intraocular pressure potentially causing blindness.
  • Retinal diseases - are eye disorders that involve any damage to the retina of the eye.

Treatments Available

People suffering from any of these disorders need not fret. Many medical solutions have been discovered, some from many centuries ago, while some are just recently discovered.

  • Eye correction - pertains to the use of corrective eyeglasses. Usually the treatment used to correct errors of refraction.
  • Contact lenses - are also used to correct errors of refraction but are used by people who want a wider scope of vision and for those who do not wish to wear eyeglasses.
  • Lasik surgery - is the most recent treatment for any eye disorder. Lasik stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea.
